During the American Arts and Crafts movement, around the turn of the 20th century, families started spending more time in the kitchen, a space that had previously been a back-of-house space designed to be hidden away.

The first new programmatic element that worked to bring together the dining room and the kitchen was the breakfast nook.

In this craftsman house addition, we re-introduce the breakfast nook as a small place that hovers between categorical uses. Its neutrality invites young families to interpret its value as they grow and design their own unique way of inhabiting a kitchen. Neutral spaces for domestic life are generous in their informality. Like a canvas, they happily receive the art that is life.
