Process & Purpose

Mattaforma was founded on the principle of cultivating new relationships with nature through architecture and design. Our approach brings together plant life, plant-based materials, and found materials to create environments, big and small, that grow and adapt.

From the outset, we respond to what already exists on a site—the land, light, and structures—with strategically sustainable ideas. We take time to understand the design goals and take note of what would define success in a specific place. To explore design opportunities and create new understanding of a place, we combined research and storytelling with three dimensional sketches, models, and images.

Each project presents new opportunities for site specific design, storytelling, research, prototyping, and the creation of new ways of life. We enjoy being resourceful and holistic, connecting architecture, landscape and interiors together. This creates both personal and public spaces that feel unified, cohesive, and ecosystemic.

TEAM

Lindsey Wikstrom
Founding Principal

Lindsey Wikstrom is an award-winning architect, known for advancing regenerative approaches to design, with a focus on material innovation, biodiversity, and wellbeing. As the Founding Principal of Mattaforma, and through both her studio and her scholarship, Lindsey advances the idea that architecture can be a choreography of care: designing not only for buildings, but for the interconnected flourishing of communities, landscapes, and planetary systems.

Lindsey is the recipient of the 2026 National Design Award for Emerging Designer from Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

She is the author of Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures (Routledge, 2023), a book that situates architecture within living forest systems and argues for more just and ecological building practices. She has contributed essays to Domus, Architect's Newspaper and other publications, and joins conversations with other global leaders in design and ecology, including Prada's Possible Conversations and MoMA’s Emilio Ambasz Institute.

Lindsey has led graduate-level architecture studios at Columbia GSAPP, Yale, Cornell, and Syracuse, and holds a Master of Architecture from Columbia University. She is also a frequent public speaker, presenting at conferences, universities, and cultural institutions on topics ranging from mass timber futures to ecological urbanism.
