Families started spending more time in the kitchen around the turn of the 20th century, and Craftsman-style houses were the architecture that tested this new expanded definiton of domesticity. What had previously been a back-of-house space was now centrally located. The first new programmatic element that brought together the dining room and the kitchen was the breakfast nook.
In this craftsman house addition, the breakfast nook is re-introduced as a small place that hovers between categorical uses. Its neutrality invites young families to interpret its value as they grow and design their own unique way of inhabiting a kitchen and dining space. Neutral spaces for domestic life are generous in their informality. Like a canvas, they happily receive the art that is life.
